I have read so much now, I am not sure what I learned where. I will say that everything I have been processing over the last four weeks or so has my head spinning. As ideas like cultures, vocation, creation, and community all roll around in my head,…

What am I learning? With my head still spinning after a week with the cohort with the influx of new ideas, I dropped off Doug and Ryan at DTW and headed home. We will no longer speak of culture but of cultures, as even in our home church there are v…

As I left Detroit I was struck with the power of narratives to shape our lives. Over the past several months (without knowing this was the direction we would be taking in our class) I have been developing an argument in relation to how we make decis…

Our first cohort met again this week to begin their second semester of work. They spent a week with me discussing issues related to Gospel and culture. It was a great time. We read James Brownson's book, Speaking the Truth in Love, and Green and Bak…

Chris, It leaves us recognizing that we need to make disciples. And so we mentor, we work in small groups, we teach, and we show what it means to be a disciple. 1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in t…

Missional Leadership News

One of the great things about our Master's in Missional Leadership is that we're not tied to a single location. Because our face-to-face requirements are only one week a semester, we can hold class anywhere our students can travel.

Our first cohort has made two trips thus far to our campus, but in their second year we send them to more exotic locales. Well, maybe exotic is not quite the right word, but they'll get to experience something other than the Rochester College campus.

This coming Aug… Continue

What difference does the world make for the church?

Mark asked me to post a blog entry before the end of the month that has something to do with God, church, and world. Thanks for the direction, Mark—that makes it a pretty open field.

I’m going to try to be provocative. So…here it goes. The question I’d like to open up today is this: ‘What difference does the world make for the church?’ I’d like to offer two somewhat interrelated observations about this question and then close with some questions to consider.

Who Can Do Theology?

That seems like a simple enough question, doesn't it? Who can do theology? Who is allowed to think critically about "God stuff"? Who is qualified to discern the many ways in which God's story is intersecting with ours? I know the Sunday School answer (besides Jesus, always the best bet in Sunday School): everyone can do theology. Everyone can think critically about "God stuff." Everyone is qualified to discern how God's story intersects with their own. But to quote my good friend and college foo… Continue

Becoming Missional

The week before I left my wife, children, and the pacific northwest to fly to Rochester Hills, Michigan for our first one week intensive course as a part of Rochester College's first Missional Leadership cohort I began to get nervous. What kind of people will I be in community with during this learning experience? What kind of learning will we be engaged in? What have I gotten myself into?! And what a generous blessing it was to be welcomed into our first classroom experience by… Continue

"WHAT!?!"

Having been together for the retreat and then our first week of classes as a cohort has been a huge blessing in getting to know each other. But I believe this blog gives us a lasting blessing being able to discuss some of the things we heard in class while others listen in and comment as well. I really look forward to your input on this!

Sitting in Dr. Patrick Keifert’s class last week there were several statements I heard with which I wholeheartedly agree, and found myself thinking, “Wish I’d… Continue
